The attendance crisis in UK schools continues to make headlines. Two recent articles from Schools Week and TES Magazine emphasise the need for multi-agency collaboration and the use of student engagement as a predictive tool to tackle absenteeism. The data is alarming: national absence rates have risen to 7.1%, up from 4-5% pre-pandemic, and one in five students now misses the equivalent of an afternoon each week. This crisis is not just about being present in the classroom—it’s about re-engaging students in meaningful learning.
In response, the ImpactEd Group has convened a new high-level research commission with representation from educational leaders, councils, and academy trusts. This commission will survey over 100,000 pupils to determine whether student engagement—defined as a student’s level of commitment and emotional investment in school—can serve as an early indicator for attendance and academic outcomes. If successful, this research could provide schools with the data needed to implement targeted interventions and prevent chronic absenteeism.
At Purple Ruler, we recognise that boosting attendance is about more than just getting students back in the classroom. It’s about creating an environment where learning is engaging and accessible. Our tailored learning programmes are designed to address the root causes of disengagement by offering personalised and targeted support that aligns with each school’s curriculum. By focusing on re-engaging students in key subjects such as Maths, English, and Science, we provide the academic and pastoral support needed to boost learner's confidence, attendance and improve overall academic outcomes.
Our services are designed to complement the goals of this commission by using data-driven insights to identify students at risk of disengagement and absenteeism. By working closely with schools, we provide a seamless pathway for students to reintegrate into their academic journey, bridging the gap between learning loss and future success.
Our mission is to be part of the solution that addresses not just attendance, but the underlying learning and engagement issues at the heart of this crisis. Providing changing education for a changing world.
